Recommendation (Reference) Letters

Professional letters of recommendation are shared with prospective employers. Reference writers may include supervisors and advisors who are familiar with your professional, leadership, and work experiences, and professors who are familiar with your academic abilities. Candidates seeking employment in the field of education should include teachers who have supervised their student teaching and can speak to their potential to perform as a teacher.

It is helpful to supply your reference writers with a recent copy of your resume, and transcript as appropriate (i.e. if applying to graduate school).

  • Professionally Managed Reference File

A number of internet sites provide professional credentials services for a nominal fee, including Interfolio. Using an online, professionally managed credentials service allows you to collect, store, update, and request referrals of recommendation letters and application materials via a single, secure Web site.  Benefits include: 24/7 availability, speedy service, confidentiality, reliability (technology reduces risk of human error) and the ability for your references to submit their recommendation letters on-line.

  • Self-Managed Reference File

With a self-managed document file, you control your file, what is in it, what goes out to employers, and when. In addition, your only cost is for photocopies, envelopes, and postage. By managing your own file, you are able to submit a comprehensive package when applying for positions. You can mail your cover letter, resume, and recommendation letters in one mailing. Use a large (9x12) envelope. Do not fold materials. Always type addresses on the envelope or mailing labels.

  • Documents You May Include in Your Reference File

  • Resume/curriculum vitae
  • Standard cover letter and/or letter of interest tailored to individual position
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Writing/project samples
  • Official transcript(s) available from the Kent State Registrar's office.
  • As appropriate, teacher certification/teaching license (unless you are a recent graduate in the process of obtaining certification) and application form (if required - check with individual schools for specific guidelines)
