CBE - (Credit by Examination)
Credit for selected approved courses is granted under the Credit-By-Examination program (CBE) coordinated by Academic Testing Services. Students with demonstrable ability and knowledge in a particular subject area may earn credit in certain courses by taking special examinations and/or completing special assignments through the appropriate departments.
Students who wish to pursue CBE must complete the Credit-By-Examination Application to gain college permission. Such permission is granted only if the student presents documented evidence of substantial prior preparation in the subject area.
- CBE is available to currently enrolled Kent State University students.
- Students may be tested for CBE only once for any given course.
- Students may NOT take CBE for any course for which they have received a grade, including withdrawal (A-F, AU, IN, NR, S, SF, U, W, Y, or Z).
- Students should refer to their Undergraduate Catalog for further information regarding credit-testing eligibility.
- The CBE fee is $30 per credit hour, payable at the Career Services Center.
- Students must test within a one-year period of the initial application or they will forfeit their fees and must reapply.
- If the student passes the test with a grade of "C" or better, the academic course and credit hours will be posted to the student's academic record by the Transfer Center in the Registrar's Office.
Procedures for Completing the Credit-By-Examination Application
- Step I: The student initiates a request for credit-by-exam by completing Step I of the Credit-By-Examination Application.
- Step II: The student obtains written approvals from their College or Regional Campus Dean.
- Step III: The student pays the $30.00 per credit hour fee at Career Services. Payment can be made via credit card or check payable to KSU-CSC. After fee payment, Career Services will then forward the application to the department.
- Step IV: The department examiner will contact the student to establish an exam date and time. After the exam is completed, the completed application will be forwarded to the Career Services Center.
- Step V: Test results will be distributed by the Career Services Center to the student and appropriate campus offices.
